About Reverend M. E. Williams

As a young child, Pastor Michael Williams attended Sunday School at the Union Baptist Church in Ginger Ridge, St. Catherine, Jamaica.

In his late teens he began visiting the Church of God in Christ in Connors District, St. Catherine and on 19th October 1955 at his workshop he was Saved.  It happened during a period of three days fasting at COGIC when the love of God came into his heart and he began to cry.  It was the last day of the fast of which he was totally unaware.  Since that week the Lord took a complete hold of his life and he has never turned back.

In 1960, prompted by the adverts from across the miles from Jamaica’s mother country England, where they were told there were many opportunities , he came to the UK.  He married Greta in 1961 and they have three children.    Church of God in Christ in Luton became their church, and it was there that he soon worked as Assistant Secretary, which required him to visit Memphis three times for official meetings. He was responsible for taking the Minutes back to England.

He became an evangelist in 1963. During that year, Pastor R. Bruce of Aylesbury approached him and asked if he could accompany him to Watford, where there was a possibility of a work opening.  It was on that visit that he met up with the Beckford family, namely Brother Vincent and Sister Susan Beckford who were  known to him from Jamaica. These were the founding members of  COGIC Watford Assembly.

After this initial visit it was decided that a work would start in Watford.  He was subsequently ordained as a Pastor and took over the work in Watford with the agreement and support of the founder members.

The opening programme was held on Saturday 18th May 1963 at Watford Fields School Hall which became their place of worship until Sunday 30th July 1978.  Their next place of worship became Kingham Hall from 6th August 1978 to 2nd August 1989.

Beechen Grove Baptist Church premises became their place of worship on 3rd September 1989 and remains so today.

Pastor Williams became a prison chaplain at HM Youth Custody Centre, The Mount, Bovingdon on Thursday 14th January 1988 – a position he finally relinquished in 2002.

On 16th February 2001 Bishop Alvin A. Blake recommended to the Executive Board that Pastor Williams and Pastor Hudson become Superintendents and after their agreement, the decision was made known to the General Assembly that they were given the position as Superintendent by Bishop Blake.  After much questioning and discussion, approval of this decision was approximately unanimous.

Superintendent and Mother G. Williams have served faithfully ever since, and continue to shepherd the flock at COGIC Watford Assembly.

Superintendent Williams is a faithful and dedicated man of God who has a capacity and energy for the ministry and a love for his brethren that is genuinely given by God and comes from his heart, for not many are able to exhibit such caring support and unfailing determination to see that the Kingdom scores success.  One of his mottos is, ‘it is not important who kicks the ball into the net, so long as we score the goal.’  It is a testament to the fact that he shows no favouritism and gives encouragement to all who show themselves willing to work for the ministry.  He is an encourager and by far a man who stands for peace.
